Short for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, LEED is a third-party independent certification program created to guide the construction, design and daily operation of environmentally conscious buildings.

LEED-certified buildings are designed to:

  • Lower operating costs and increase asset value
  • Reduce waste sent to landfills
  • Conserve energy and water
  • Be healthier and safer for occupants
  • Reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions
  • Qualify for tax rebates, zoning allowances and other incentives in hundreds of cities

LEED certification is based on 100 points distributed across five categories: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources and Indoor Environmental Quality. HVAC is one of the best areas in which to gather LEED points, with a number of available credit opportunities to achieve the highest LEED level of designation.

Buildings that are LEED certified will use energy more efficiently than standard buildings, and as a result often enjoy tax savings or other incentives for their smart energy use. Typically, the higher their LEED certification, the more incentives they receive.
